There’s nothing like a good spring cleaning after a long, cold winter to make you feel organized and refreshed. Spring is the perfect time to rid your home of unwanted clutter, prep your yard for seasonal landscaping, and give everything in your house a facelift – including the floors. For hardwood, linoleum, or vinyl floors, this means stripping and refinishing to restore their former beauty. This may seem like a daunting task, but there are plenty of tools out there that make the process easier.
The first step in floor stripping is to determine what kind of stripper you need. There are several products that will help strip old wax off of floors, and what you use depends on the type of floor you have. You will also need a wax sealer to refinish your floors. It is recommended to rent an electric floor stripper and an electric buffer to eliminate some of the manual labor that is required to make your floors shine again.
After you find the right product for the project, you can start prepping the floor space. Remove all furniture and other obstacles from the room, and clean the floor by sweeping. Since many of the chemicals used in floor strippers are harsh, it is recommended that you open windows for ventilation, and wear long pants, a long-sleeved shirt, protective gloves, and goggles.
Follow the instructions on your floor stripper, and start by testing it in a small corner or usually covered section of the floor. This way, you can make sure there is no discoloration or other damage done to the floor. Then, mop the stripper onto the floor and let it sit for 5-10 minutes. Use an electric floor scrubber to scrape the old wax off the floor. Rinse the floor with a neutralizer, and allow it to dry completely.
Finally, apply as many coats of wax sealer as needed, and use an electric buffer to make it shine. Your floors will be clean and look as good as new!
