Tips for Renting Heavy Equipment

Managing heavy equipment is no easy task, even for those that are experienced in the matter. No matter who you are, there are some basic guidelines that you should always stick to. Whether you’re an individual contractor or part of a larger organization, these tips will help you get the most out of your rental equipment!

Find a Well Equipped Renter

There’s nothing more annoying than having to use multiple vendors for all the equipment you need. It will save you time and money to find one supplier who has everything you need. While it isn’t always possible, chances are if you contact them and ask them to add something to their warehouse they will be happy to do it. They would much rather have equipment in their inventory that they know has demand. Find a rental company that you can build a relationship with and will prioritize your needs.

Use Their Repair Services

If a tool is damaged on the job, don’t waste your time and money trying to get it repaired before returning it. Chances are your rental company is already an expert in servicing their inventory, and depending on how it was damaged they might not even charge you for the repair. It’s always better to ask them first. Not only will you save time shopping around for a repair service, but you’ll probably get a better deal than you thought.

Get Package Rates

If you are renting a lot of equipment all at once, you might be able to get a package rate on everything. This is especially true for extended period rentals of two weeks or more. While it isn’t always possible, it’s always worth asking about their policy when it comes to bulk deals, you never know!

Buy Your Core Tools

While tool rental agencies are a great resource, you don’t want to rent everything. When you’re getting established as a contractor it’s easier to rent because of lower upfront costs and a lesser need of storage space. But once you are established, it’s usually better to buy the tools that you use on every project. If you don’t mind buying used, talk to your equipment rental company, they might be able to offer you a deal while they upgrade their inventory.
